Lost Souls – Chapter 4: The Ones Who Punish Themselves

— “I don’t want to be kind to myself.”

Some people never hurt others.
But every single day…
they strike themselves.

They sabotage their own lives, ruin relationships, push away anything good.
When they get close to happiness,
they find a way to destroy it.
There’s always that quiet voice inside whispering:
“You don’t deserve this.”

These people aren’t lost.
They are at war with themselves.
And that, too, is a kind of loss:
A soul punishing itself.

Why Do People Sabotage Themselves?

Because somewhere, sometime…
they stopped believing in their own worth.

The reasons often hide deep,
but they cut sharp:

  • A teacher who said, “You’ll never succeed”

  • A parent who said, “I’m not proud of you”

  • A heartbreak that whispered, “Who could ever love you?”

  • Or simply the voice they built inside themselves:
    “I’m not enough.”

Once that belief takes root,
a person becomes an enemy of their own happiness.

How Do We Punish Ourselves?

Some do it loudly:
Addiction, self-harm, dangerous thoughts...
But most do it quietly:

  • Quitting therapy right when it starts to help

  • Ruining healthy relationships

  • Downplaying success and abandoning every goal

  • Doubting love, pushing it away

  • Constantly shrinking themselves, blaming, belittling

And through it all, a silent phrase repeats:
“This is too much for me… I don’t deserve it.”

This Isn’t Punishment. It’s Grief.

What looks like punishment
is often unprocessed grief.

When grief isn’t honored,
pain turns inward.

The soul starts to think:
“If no one’s going to punish me… maybe I should.”

And so, the deepest wound
comes not from the outside —
but from within.

Healing Begins With Facing the Guilt

The first step is to name it:
“Yes. I am hurting myself.”

That awareness opens a door —
a door to forgiving yourself.
Because healing doesn’t begin with success.
It begins with acceptance.

A soul that punishes itself
only longs to hear one thing:
“You don’t have to suffer anymore.”

That one sentence can change everything.
But first,
you must choose compassion over punishment.

And that’s not easy.
Because sometimes,
hugging yourself is the heaviest thing in the world.

Some people…
When they arrive, no one notices.
When they leave, no one asks.
They’ve become shadows within society.
We’ll meet them there.
